Overview

A segment 19–27 base pairs upstream from the startpoint of eukaryotic structural genes to which RNA polymerase II binds. The segment is 7 base pairs long, and the nucleotides most commonly found are TATAAAA; named in honor of David Hogness. See canonical sequence, Pribnow box, promoter, TATA box-binding protein.
